WoW Forever add-ons: which ones work and how to install them

An add-on needs a Forever version. A Classic Era, Burning Crusade or Mists of Pandaria Classic version is written for the Classic interface and does not work as it is. WoW Forever shares nearly all of modern World of Warcraft's add-on functions and the same restrictions.

Which add-ons have a Forever version?

These add-ons publish a Forever version or list Forever's interface number in their files:

  • Quests and leveling: Questie, RestedXP Guides, Azeroth Pilot Reloaded, Guidelime.
  • Dungeons and damage: Details! Damage Meter, Deadly Boss Mods, BigWigs, ThreatClassic2.
  • Interface: ElvUI, Bartender4, Plater Nameplates, Grid2, HealBot, Bagnon, Leatrix Plus, Plumber.
  • Maps and loot: TomTom, AtlasLoot Classic Forever (a separate Forever version by another author; the original AtlasLootClassic has none).
  • Trade: Auctionator, Scrap.
  • Other: Simulationcraft, GSE.

WeakAuras has no Forever version. Its team says one is unlikely because of Forever's add-on restrictions.

The add-on directory lists add-ons by what they help with, and World Recorder records drops, quests and vendors while you play.

Where do add-ons go?

In the Forever beta, add-ons go in World of Warcraft/_classic_beta_/Interface/AddOns. Unzip each add-on so that its folder sits directly in AddOns, for example AddOns/Questie.

The released game is a separate product. Blizzard's current install setting places it in World of Warcraft/_forever_, so its add-ons most likely go in _forever_/Interface/AddOns. Blizzard has not said whether beta add-ons move there. Blizzard also plans to rename Forever's game type before launch, so at launch install current Forever versions of your add-ons in the released game's folder; beta versions may need an update.

How do you load an add-on the game calls out of date?

At character selection, open the menu and choose AddOns. In the AddOn List, Out of date means the add-on does not list the game's interface number. Select Load out of date AddOns to skip that check. The add-on can still fail if it uses functions Forever does not have.

Forever's add-on interface number is 16001. An add-on that lists 16001 passes that check without the checkbox.

Which add-ons does Forever keep out?

Forever applies the add-on restrictions of modern World of Warcraft. Add-ons cannot run the combat calculations that automate marking or communicating for players. Boss timers, damage meters, quest helpers, bars and bags work within those rules. When the game blocks an add-on action, it shows a message that the add-on was blocked from an action only available to the Blizzard UI.

Do add-on settings stay saved in the beta?

Whether they stay saved now is unknown. On September 19 the author of Leatrix Plus reported that the beta client did not keep add-on settings between sessions, called it a game bug and said Blizzard will fix it. The newest Leatrix Plus release notes no longer mention it.
