WoW Forever library books: all 40 locations and Friend of the Library rewards

WoW Forever hides 40 books across Azeroth, and every class can collect them. Donate them to your faction’s library in Stormwind or Undercity: ten books complete Friend of the Library and a choice of two necklaces, twenty complete Greater Friend of the Library and a choice of two rings. Every book’s own text calls it “a fine addition to any library’s collection”, or something less flattering. Mages gain the most, because the library also opens their Research profession.

Where do you hand in library books?

Alliance characters donate to Garion Wendell in the Stormwind library, around 37.4, 80.8. Horde characters donate to Owen Thadd in the Undercity, around 73.4, 33.0. The game also has a Stormwind Library Card and an Undercity Library Card.

Players report that every donated book pays out a Comprehension Charm, which only mages can use to decipher scrolls.

What do Friend of the Library and Greater Friend of the Library give?

At ten books, Friend of the Library offers one of two item level 25 necklaces:

  • Scholarly Pendant, with Stamina and Spirit. Beta players recorded 6 Stamina and 4 Spirit.
  • Erudite’s Amulet, with Stamina and Agility. Beta players recorded 6 Stamina and 4 Agility.

At twenty books, Greater Friend of the Library offers one of two item level 40 rings:

  • Philanthropist’s Ring, with Intellect and spell damage and healing, for every class.
  • Field Researcher’s Loop, with equal Strength, Agility and Stamina. The game restricts it to Rogues.

The game files also hold five more rewards that no beta report has shown being earned yet. Artifact Seeker’s Pendant, Museum Keeper’s Chain and the Antique Bulwark shield are item level 58. Crest of Elucidation and Researcher’s Night Light are item level 50 off-hands that require level 40. How many books they need is not yet known.

What is Mage Research?

Players report that mages who donate books unlock a Research profession, which grants Study. Its tooltip reads “Perform spell research, resulting in a bundle of scrolls. Requires a suitable library.” Players report that Study uses Light Feathers and has a one-hour cooldown. Early beta players also reported the profession disappearing after a relog, so expect changes before launch.

A library does not have to be a city. The Camping system includes a Library Shelf: “Summon a shelf of books to a campsite, allowing it to function as a library. Requires a Campfire nearby.” A mage can study at a camp in the field, and the scrolls it produces feed the same system that leads to the Coldflame Saber. Plan the campfire in the Camping planner.

Where are all 40 library books?

The client does not place the books, so every location below comes from players walking the world. Most books sit where Season of Discovery placed them, and beta players have confirmed many of them. If a book is missing from its spot, it may have moved for Forever.

Which ten books should you collect first?

Worked example: an Alliance character around level 30 collects ten books without leaving Alliance roads. Elwynn Forest gives two books at one spot. Westfall adds Bewitchments and Glamours and one of the two Rumi of Gnomeregan spots, and Loch Modan adds Runes of the Sorcerer-Kings. Duskwood, the Wetlands and northern Stranglethorn Vale add one book each, and Arathi Highlands and Alterac Mountains bring the count to ten. Friend of the Library then pays out its necklace.

Horde characters reach ten with the three Barrens books, Stonetalon Mountains, Thousand Needles, the Orgrimmar tablet, both Silverpine Forest books, the Tirisfal Glades primer and Desolace.

Several books sit next to dungeons. The Wailing Caverns book pairs well with farming the druid serpent set, and the Blackrock Mountain pair with a Blackrock Spire run. More hidden rewards are collected in every WoW Forever secret found so far.
