Coldflame Saber in WoW Forever: Scroll of the Saber and the battle mage

The Coldflame Saber is a mage-only sword you make yourself in WoW Forever. Decipher untranslated scrolls with the mage Comprehension skill until one becomes the Scroll of the Saber, then use it on the Blade of Silverlaine from Shadowfang Keep. The finished sword carries Frostburn: “Melee attacks deal 98 Fire additional damage against Frozen targets.”

How do you get the Scroll of the Saber?

Mages in Forever have a Comprehension skill. Many creatures drop untranslated scrolls, and Comprehend Scroll does what its tooltip says: “Decipher an untranslated scroll.” Each deciphered scroll turns into one of a family of mage scrolls, and the Scroll of the Saber is one of the rarest.

There is no fixed count. The first player known to find it deciphered 119 scrolls before it appeared, and players suspect it comes from the higher-skill scrolls rather than the first tier. Keep deciphering while you level; every other result is still useful.

The Scroll of the Saber is a Soulbound rare usable only by mages. Its use line reads “Use on Blade of Silverlaine to create a powerful weapon.”

Where does the Blade of Silverlaine drop?

Baron Silverlaine drops it in Shadowfang Keep. It is a rare sword that requires level 21, with 28 spell damage and healing and 6 Shadow Resistance on its own. One beta group reported needing twelve runs for it, so start farming the blade while the scroll search runs in parallel.

Anyone can loot and equip the blade. Only a mage holding the scroll can turn it into the Coldflame Saber.

What does the Coldflame Saber do?

Using the scroll on the blade creates the Coldflame Saber. Beta players recorded a 2.00 speed sword with 7 Intellect and 32 spell damage and healing, still requiring level 21. Its Frostburn effect adds 98 Fire damage to every melee attack against a Frozen target.

A mage freezes targets constantly. Frost Nova freezes the enemies around you in place, and the frost talents Frostbite, Shatter and Fingers of Frost in the mage talent calculator make frozen targets a normal part of a fight. Every melee swing into a frozen enemy then adds the 98 Fire damage on top of the weapon hit, while your spells keep working as usual.

Which other scrolls can Comprehension produce?

The scrolls that are not the Saber are rewards in their own right. Their tooltips describe them directly.

  • Scroll of Imbue Spark imbues a sword for one hour “causing your Flame Blast cooldown to sometimes reset when you are struck by a melee attack.” The mage ability is Fire Blast; the scroll’s text calls it Flame Blast.
  • Scroll of Imbue Iceknife imbues a dagger for one hour “causing it to occasionally freeze foes when hit.”
  • Scroll of Rat Familiar summons a rat for an hour. “Its presence increases your Intellect by 2.”
  • Scroll of Cat Familiar does the same with 12 Intellect and requires level 25.
  • Further scrolls cover Frog Familiar and Confuse Beast, and weapon imbues named Lesser Flame, Flame, Greater Flame, Frost, Greater Frost, Chillknife, Balefrost, Baleflame, Manablade, Striking, Accuracy, Precision, Quickening and Spellbreak.

Comprehension Charms “aid the translation of scrolls and spell notes.” Players report that each book donated to a faction library pays out a charm to mages, which ties this system to the library book collection.

Is a battle mage build worth it?

Worked example: a level 21 Frost mage with the Coldflame Saber opens with Frost Nova, steps into melee and swings while the target is frozen. Each hit lands its normal weapon damage plus 98 Fire. When the freeze breaks, the mage steps out and casts as usual, so nothing is lost by carrying the sword.

The build is an experiment rather than a proven meta. Test it in your own group, and plan the frost talents it depends on in the mage talent calculator. The Shadowfang Keep loot planner keeps the blade as a goal between runs, and every WoW Forever secret found so far lists the next hidden reward.
